Most of the music composed between 1600 and today is based upon major and minor scales. Music of this type is called tonal music. In tonal music the first note of the scale predominates over the other notes of the scale.
Music based on the C major scale, for example, is said to be in the key of C. The notes of the C major scale are:

The major scale is always constructed in the same pattern of whole and half steps as follows:
1 1 1/2 1 1 1 1/2
